Who We Are
We are a campus organization dedicated to promoting and perpetuating Polynesian cultural traditions, specifically through mele hawai'i (song), hula (dance), cultural workshops, ʻōlelo hawai'i (language), and various forms of Tahitian music and dance ('ori tahiti). Hawaiian Ensemble is a way of spreading awareness of Polynesian culture to everyone on campus, Polynesians and non-Polynesians alike, thereby supporting the preservation of the culture and stories that we are so proud to be guests of. We serve as a place for performance and sharing of the artistic expressions of any and all Polynesian cultures. We support a welcoming atmosphere where students can share knowledge of Pacific Islander culture by educating others about dance and breaking traditional stereotypes. What makes the USF Hawaiian Ensemble so unique is our passion for dance and creativity. We choreograph our own dances, carrying out the importance and meaning of the Polynesian oral tradition. Our goal is to contribute to the University’s mission of “Changing the world from here” by bringing the Aloha spirit and the diverse culture of the Polynesian Islands to the USF and Bay Area community.

Dance
Hula & Ori Tahiti
From Kahiko to `auana to otea to `aparima, Hawaiian Ensemble shares a passion for all. Each dance is unique, but all were important to the islands and their way of life. Ensemble explores the different implements and chants used in this artform.

Ho`ikes & Luaus
Every year, Hawaiian Ensemble holds its signature event consisting of a showcase of Hawaiian and Polynesian culture and a traditional island dinner. Students, families, and friends travel near and far to enjoy a night of music, chant, dance, raffles, and food. The theme of ho`ike differs each year, all focusing on a story or value of the islands. Ensemble seeks to provide an artistic medium for creative education of the Hawaiian culture. This is an opportunity for the Ensemble to share what they have learned throughout the year. It is also a night of collaboration with other campus organizations such as ASUSF Voices, Vitality, and VarCity. Furthermore, the organization's seniors are recognized for their final year of being a member.
As expected, a lot of hard work goes into the annual event. What makes Hawaiian Ensemble great is that our ohana is not limited to dancers. Click below to learn more about being a committee team member.
